album blurb

starfari_total_solar_hanuman_clear_the_clouds

FULL POST

Irvine grown duo Starfari‘s newest EP is a step above their first release Clear the Clouds. This time, they’re shooting for space with Total Solar. Whereas their first EP featured more tropical and cinematic sounds, their newest EP is an ode to the Great American Eclipse, and the wonders found in exploring the shadows. To that effect, the EP has a much higher energy influence with dashes of world and hip hop.

Hanuman is the heaviest hitting track on the upcoming EP. It features Niko Brahman and Jules telling a story of passion, distraction, the rat race, and being the judge of your own journey. It’s clear to see there’s a level of sophistication and sound experimentation that the homies Ali and Alex have taken on with their Total Solar EP. A few words about “Hanuman” from STARFARI themselves:

“The main thing we’ll vividly remember from this song is that we were writing and finishing it as we were shielding ourselves from the election results coming in back in November. This song is coincidentally about not letting ulterior distractions get in the way of your focus and being the hero of your mind; realizing the courage and strength within you like the Lord Hanuman.”

LAPD

FULL POST

Imagine, if you will, our boys in blue donning instruments and crusading throughout the night to stop baddies from perpetuating the culture of terrible music. A welcome sight that would be, but alas our men in uniform have more pressing matters to attend to.

Instead, LAPD is the brainchild of multi-talented Ryan Pollie. The sound he’s developed is far from horrid. We finally got around to listening to his debut album and have only this to say: Buy it!

It’s a lo-fi heartbreak that when finished, leaves you in a strangely pained joy. It’s kind of like ripping off a band-aid. We mean that in the best of ways. He’s really talented. Buy his album. Album two coming soon!

FULL POST

HVOB’s minimal house sound with Anna’s background vocals has always been a point of calm for us. Their newest EP, Window, is no different. The title-track’s video [as with all of their videos] is nothing short of awesome. With sets that represent part art installation, part music video, part soundtrack, the trio’s multi-layered aspect makes it that much easier to drift away.

Window comes out Friday and features remixes from minimal-tech powerhouse Gui Boratto and the worldly Acid Pauli.

Sweater Beats | Download Cloud City FREE

Sweater Beats’ [Antonio Cuna] forthcoming EP, Cloud City, is full of high-energy R&B beats we’ve come to love from him. In this EP, he sends us soaring by lifting the dreamy beats with aerated synths and piano riffs. The added vocals from soulstress allie on ‘Dark Matter’ are a welcome bonus. Here’s to hoping this beat-maker’s future reaches new heights as well.

The Free EP comes out via HW&W tomorrow [10|28]. Get it, and then be sure to catch him at Day of the Dead this weekend!

The Donkeys | Buy Ride the Black Wave

Summer is here. That can only mean a few things: lofty intrumentals, dazed drumming, and echoes of adventure. The Donkeys’ Ride the Black Wave perfectly encompasses all of these sonic requirements. Take a midweek mental vacation with this album. Or swap cement for sand cause, you know, school’s out and all.

PillowTalk | Buy Je Ne Sais Quoi

Wolf+Lamb artists PillowTalk believe in sexy-smooth; 2011’s The Come Back exposed me to that. Their recent (and first) LP Je Ne Sais Quoi is a fusion of R&B, disco, house, dance, pop, and techno [D.A.G.!] that has surpassed all my expectations and has taken over our ears here at C+A+D. It’s been nearly 2 months of listening and we’re still finding out why we love it so much.

I like to think it is due to the heart-warming dreaminess in each track. Opener, ‘Our Story’, sets it up perfectly – this album is a soulful sonic dance adventure. The stories may differ, but the feel-good soul is absolute. They’ve put Je Ne Sais Quoi up for your free streaming pleasure on SoundCloud. Show the crew some love and buy it!

While you’re here, check out one of my all-time favourite mixes too.
