At first glance, BADBADNOTGOOD is one of the more curious placements on the lineup. The Canadian trio has made its name in avant-garde jazz jamming. Delve a little deeper, and it comes to light that their off-kilter beat work has also earned them features alongside stars in the hip-hop and R&B scene. Catch them Saturday for what is looking to be one of the most unique sets of the weekend. Expect some guest features.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – Shame (BADBADNOTGOOD Remix)

Daniel Caesar – Paradise (ft. BADBADNOTGOOD & Sean Leon)

Little Simz x BadBadNotGood – Our Conversations

The Moony Habits crew has been slowly, but surely, making headway in the LA underground. With 3 shows already logged, Moony Habits is making quite the name for itself. This Thursday, they’re shaking it up again with Rhythm and Bass style that’s rather different from LA’s typical hip-hop and beats scene. Sans one DJ set, every act will be performing LIVE.

Soulection’s Chris McClenney with bring his whole band as he tickles the ivories; StarRo will have vocal support from Gavin Turek, Jarell Perry, Iman Europe, Lindsay Olsen as well as special guest drummer, David Myers Jr.; Moony Habits veteran Mike Gao will be performing his all new Polyplayground set; and A Sol Mechanic will perform live alongside a special secret guest. Astronautica will also be present to DJ the way she does (very well on the beats). Kuro will be playing the changeovers. Come prepared with your night-souls because things are going to get romantic.

Our bi-monthly series with Modern Disco Ambassadors continues this Friday! Those of you at last week’s show can attest to how fun it was. Free billiards. Great beer selection. Awesome people. Lucky for you, this week’s show promises to be just as, if not more, bouncy.

Jazzy and glitchy beats from Free the Robots, sultry and soulful rhythms from StarRo, and MDA’s current listings from Torosbros means this’ll be a night of heavy grooving and swaying.

Free the Robots – Soul Control

Free the Robots – The Truth

Chet Faker – Talk is Cheap (StarRo Remix)

Disclosure – Latch (StarRo Remix)

Lightning In A Bottle | Lineup | Tickets | Set Times

Kraak & Smaak are a trio from the Netherlands who have that whole “anti-genre” vibe about them that we love. You’ll find hints of jazz, disco, funk, indie, soul, pop, and house all throughout their music. Their 2013 album Chrome Waves is one of my favourites. They also host a weekly show on Sublime FM called Keep on Searching that spotlights the current underground as well as some rare, old school, dug-up tracks. It’s amazing.

They’re playing at 8:50pm on Saturday at the Lightning Stage – don’t miss out on what is promising to be a smooth and funky set.

LIB Spotlight brings attention to special artists that will be featured at Lightning In A Bottle Fest 2014.

“I’m not trying to watch instruments bro, I just wanna see some knobs being twisted.” While wildly amusing and sometimes gathering agreement from myself, this quote sums up a main direction that music has taken in the electronic age. So while many artists continue to push the boundaries of what computers can do, Chicago octet Kids These Days succeed in taking us on a whirlwind through genres and eras with a true appreciation for musicianship. The sounds come together via trombone, trumpet, drums, bass, keyboard, vocalist, and rapper to form a refreshing blend of soul/jazz/hip-hop/blues/rock. The band’s members, all 18 or 19, met while studying at a music school while simultaneously attending high school. While the horns blare and vocalists Liam Cunningham and Macie Stewart provide a contemporary soul sound reminiscent of The Black Keys, MC Vic Mensa provides flavor with solid lines and a flow that reflects a maturity far past his age. He’d definitely be able to hold his own on traditional hip hop beats, but his style matches so perfectly with their sound so I’d hope he doesn’t stray too far away. Their Hard Times EP is for sale on iTunes for $3.99 and if there were ever a time to step back from stinginess, this would be it. They’re currently working on a full length album entitled “Trap House Rock.” Their band interest on facebook is “we enjoy positive vibrations and bangin out dat dope music,” which is so odd because we’re all about the same things over here. If you are too, it’s time to get keen. Scope some of their videos below.
