Foster the People | Buy Supermodel

Foster the People’s sophomore release just hit the market. 3 years in the making, Supermodel could have taken the radio-pop ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ route or a more ‘I Would Do Anything for You’ approach. We were both surprised and pleased the trio chose to move towards the latter. Don’t get us wrong, we love the catchy tracks of Torches (‘Best Friend’ will satisfy that), but Supermodel‘s gritty and introspective direction just seemed like a more appropriate path after all this time. See it as a ‘Coming of Age’ if you will.

This album takes on a cohesiveness that requires it to be listened to in full. Cherry-picking tracks doesn’t do it justice or convey the right effect. With its self-reflective start off, Supermodel locks you in by the time you reach ‘Pseudologia Fantastica’. It resurges with the poppy climax of ‘Best Friend’. By ‘Fire Escape’, Mark Foster is all burned out – the respite is welcome (to pre-orders) before the psychedelic trip of ‘Tabloid Super Junkie’. All in all, it looks like we’ll be setting the schedule to enjoy some Foster the People come Coachella Saturday (26/33 days left!).

Being compared to The Beatles is no easy feat. The boys of Temples have, however, absolutely earned the distinction. As soon as ‘Shelter Song’ made its way to the airwaves, the music world knew an iconic Psychedelic-Pop band of our age was born. Since then, every release they’ve put out has received coverage from nearly every taste maker in the game. Their album Sun Structures is definitely among our favourite trips of the year thus far. We’ll be looking forward to the tapestry of colour across the heavens in whats looking to be the perfect Saturday sunset set.

Jagwar Ma | Howlin’

Good music coming out of Australia is becoming a way of life nowadays. Case in point: Jagwar Ma. Jagwar Ma (Jono Ma & Gabriel Winterfield) take on a huge role in this ‘revival’ scene that the music world is experiencing right now. Their debut Howlin’ is a veritable psychedelia experience. What makes them unique is their flawless combination of genres from the 60’s through the 90’s – sometimes even in the same song (‘Exercise’). You’ll catch hints of The Chemical Brothers, John Lennon, Primal Scream and The Beach Boys just to name drop a few.

Now we know those are names you don’t ever see next to each other when considering musical style, but bear with us. If you were alive or have musical influences from these periods then you’ll get what we mean when you start listening. Keep your eyes and ears on this duo; they’re destined for greatness.
