skinny genes

After ticket sales came to a close a bit earlier than expected and a bunch of my friends lagged, this show ended up being one for the bros. Perfect! I could have called it, considering how small Key Club is and the fact that HARD was putting it on. But it was all built up to be a super epic and intimate show…for the bros. We were running late and I didn’t want to miss ANY of Gesaffelstein, assuming he’d perform before Brodinski. And I was just hoping they’d play together for a larger portion of the set. Check some tracks and the HD video I got after the jump.

Washed Out – Life Of Leisure EP

Happy Martin Luther King Day to our U.S. readers! Regardless of where you’re from his existence should be acknowledged. Let today be a reminder to stay focused on your dreams, no matter how ridiculous they are, and turning them into a reality. Anything is possible with hard work and persistence. I believe in you!

Starfucker made their way back to California after a 4 month hiatus to start their U.S. tour, and we weren’t about to miss it! For some reason, they chose to leave Los Angeles out of the loop, but still made for two SoCal dates that we got to go too. Our photographer Philip Mendoza shooting the Pomona stop. I know what you’re thinking, “Woah bro. Same band? Two nights in a row? Doesn’t it get boring? Repetitive? Lose it’s magic?” No! Not at all. First, let’s disregard the fact that these guys are one of the most entertaining live bands I’ve seen. This is of course, as far as their ability to be better than the recordings and their sheer RAW energy when it comes to performing live. Let’s also disregard the fact that their lightshow is equipped with multicolored lasers that move all over the venue, giving them the most magical silhouettes throughout the performance (this and this). That being said, the two shows were very different. Check out the HD videos after the jump..

Happy Sunday friends. Feel like it’s been awhile considering that the last list was Albums of the Year…so I have two weeks of collected music to give you! This list is a pretty accurate representation of the different stuff you’ll find every week. And it’s all good! Trust and enjoy:

P.S. For those who care, Coachella has announced Azealia Banks, araabMUZIK, Jimmy Cliff, and BreakBot yesterday! I just love how they’re releasing the low-key, raw talent that people may have looked over on a lineup of big names. It’s getting closer!

It’s definitely a good thing when you can look back at where you came from (or look out your window in my case) and be happy or prideful about it. When seemingly every day people you grew up with are following their dreams and making it happen, it makes it that much more real. Young the Giant is a good example of this. They never gave up and everything eventually paid off in time. The following artists are on the same path. Oh fun fact: Irvine is the 7th safest city in America? I don’t know if that’s great or just really pussy. I’ll take it, though. Check em out after the jump…

Holy shit! New Strokes songs! Well two of them…to me at least. These demo surfaced after being buried for years in the interwebs. “Rhythm Song” seems to be a demo pre Is This It? Which explains it’s fucking AWESOME rawness, which the Strokes built their reputation around. Julian’s powerful vocals, Nik’s ridiculous riffs, getting lost in Nikolai’s basslines, Fabio’s perfect drumming, and Albert keeping it all together. Old rockin’ Strokes. Not that I’m hating on the new Strokes. It’s all just different.
The Strokes – Rhythm Song

“Hawaii Aloha” sounds like something that would be life changing live. When I first saw them at Outside Lands ’10, the crowd was pushing and shoving each other all over the place. No rules. No one cared. Singing at the top of their longs. It was the Strokes first time back in California in almost 5 years. This song reminds me of that.
The Strokes – Hawaii Aloha

“I’ll Try Anything Once” is a slower, serious, more intimate version of “You Only Live Once,” the track that got me into the lifestyle and procured the creation of YOLO. Very beautiful track that defies the Strokes we’re used to getting. I love these guys…

Finally got to meet the kids behind the bar after all these years, and these guys did work! Rocked Control Avalon like they were the headlining act. Didn’t hold back and threw down a hard electro set for a venue packed with disco house loving Treasure Fingers fans. They didn’t miss a beat and had the personalities to match. Here’s how it went:

First off…get at this video I got to get a taste of what their set was.
