Wolfgang’s hotly anticipated album was finally released a week ago, and I had to let it marinate before I could put in my two cents. Wolfgang has been in the game for longer than people are led to believe, and he still remains as one of the most consistent producers and DJs out there. Almost two years in the making, this album’s release was not taken lightly in the slightest. Nowadays, with electronic albums as a whole consisting mainly of standout bangers, expectations were still set high for Weekend In America, and Wolfgang managed to meet and exceed them in more than one regard. The album may come off as a dabble into a more radio friendly, mainstream sound but stays true to Wolfgang’s creatively hard hitting production abilities. (more…)

I was gone for a bit. Now I’m back. Cool story, I know. If you’re unfamiliar, I’m going to be the guy that keeps you updated on anything and everything EDM. I like to keep things clear-cut. If it’s good, I’ll praise it with chortle inducing metaphors. On the other hand, if it sucks it’ll get the merciless butt of my verbal assault rifle.
In the words of Mulan, let’s get down to business.
Wolfgang Gartner. A name so prodigious it requires its own sentence. His new track is Ménage à trois, French for a sexual liaison between 3 people. Need I say more? This track bangs harder than a screen door in a hurricane.

Wolfgang Gartner – Ménage à trois (Original Mix) <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

If you’ve been following the dub scene at all, you already know Borgore has been killin it. Well he’s got a record label now called Buygore and it’s got some interesting talent. One of ‘em is 24-year-old Tomba, a Dutchman with a knack for filthy, grimy dub.

(for fans of Flux Pavillion and/or J. Rabbit)

Fytch & Captain Crunch – Raindrops (Tomba Remix) <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

BONUS:
Duffy – Well, Well, Well (Artistic Raw Bootleg) <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

It’s a different feeling when you go to a show that you know is going to be worth every penny of the ticket. I’ve seen Wolfgang Gartner at Coachella, EDC, and TAO, so I knew he could rock the hell out of a festival. I was just curious to see how he’d bring it at a smaller, more intimate venue. Plus, I’ve heard only good things about Felix Cartal, and I was just as amped for his set.

We got there relatively early, but for a sold out show, I was surprised to be able to just walk right into the venue. Small place with a balcony added for multiple options, but we went straight to the pit. All the opening DJs pulled out their best tricks, but I was ready to see what the deal was with Felix. I had no idea what to expect, but he delivered some of the grimiest and twisted, electro house that had me going hard for his whole set. Saving energy wasn’t an option through the constant ravey synths and bass that I just love to hear live.

Wolfgang’s set was scheduled for 12-145, and he peaked out with his gear around 11:59. He was greeted with the third “WOLFGANG” chant of the night, this one being the loudest by far. As soon as he took on the tables he slammed us with heavy bass and blasted the lights of his crazy ass live setup. He played everything we wanted to hear: Illmerica, Space Junk, Mornin After Dark Remix, and ended with Fire Power. There’s something about the way that Space Junk drops that sends a tingle down your spine when the synths hit. I was happy to hear a LOT of songs I’ve never heard that clearly had his sound, and I can say with confidence that his album is going to be monumental when it comes out.

1:45 rolled around and Wolfgang had to close shop among a house full of fans that were turned down of their encore requests and hungered for more. I gotta give the MVDJ award to Wolfgang, but he was followed closely by Felix. Wolfgang’s geometric set up with the lights and everything really changed it all, but Felix didn’t fuck around. I’m starting my search of his stuff now so help me if you know of good stuff! If you haven’t seen Wolfgang make more of an effort to do so. You’ll see a DJ set done right.

So I just woke up from the nightmare that was Dada Life at Control Avalon last night to one of the most delightful treats you could ask for. I’m taking about Wolfgang Gartner‘s essential mix. This action packed, 120 minute mix is stuffed to the brim with 62 tracks and couldn’t have came at a better time. I was just thinking about how we haven’t had a big name essential mix in too long.

For those of you who don’t know what essential mixes are, allow me to explain. In the UK there’s this program called Radio 1 on BBC that’s hosted by the legendary Pete Tong, who DJs as well. What the program is most known for is their occasional essential mixes. They get the biggest names in the industry to make a 2 hour set, sometimes live/sometimes prerecorded, and broadcast it to the world. You can go on a google search frenzy, as they’re all downloadable. Some notable ones are by Fake Blood, Jack Beats, Deadmau5, The Twelves, Magnetic Man, Calvin Harris…you get the picture. Without further ado, let this tune be the soundtrack to your weekend!

This kid is only 18 years old and he’s killing it; I thought North Carolina was a shitty excuse for a state, until now. Porter Robinson started producing beats when he was only 13, now he’s signed to a label and touring the world. Electro synths tailed by quick raunchy dub samples; it’s like bikini wrestling in a Jell-O pit, the best of both worlds. Robinson is a boy prodigy, meet Wolfgang Gartner’s successor.

No it’s not the Hollywood squares. I’m referencing the renowned French producer, Etienne De Crecy. He’s pretty old school and back in the day he somewhat revolutionized the scene. The French fry finally penciled us in and he’s coming to Avalon this Friday. Unfortunately, it’s a DJ set so he won’t be rocking the cube but who cares; this cake doesn’t need frosting.
Get your presale tickets HERE. only 10$? that’s not gonna last, get on that!

Etienne De Crecy – Welcome <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Etienne De Crecy – Fuck <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Etienne De Crecy – Fast Track Live vs. We Are Your Friends <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

For all you bass headz here’s some fresh dub

Plan B – The Recluse (Nero Remix) <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Zeds Dead – White Satin <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Wolfgang just dropped this dirty number.

Wolfgang Gartner – Illmerica <-♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

So normally I only post beats, but it’s time for a nice change. For those of you that don’t know me I’m a total cinephile. On a rainy day like today, nothing sounds better than a mug of hot chocolate and a solid film. Last night I watched one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time, “Oldboy”. Apparently South Koreans know how to get shit done; revenge, lust, social psychological concepts. Not to mention the antagonist, holy shit. Heath Ledger was pretty sick in Dark Knight but he’s got nothing on Ji-Tae Yu. I’m not going waste your time hyping it up, but let me just say it was one of the greatest endings I’ve ever experienced. MUST SEE 9.5/10

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you weep alone.

Ten weeks of this…wow. Can’t remember the last time I’ve committed myself to something for that long, and I couldn’t be happier. I love that people have been going out of their way to tell me they’ve been picking up from these lists, because that’s the motivation I need to get it done. Very busy week with school starting, and I had to miss out on BOTH socal Ratatat dates because of it. My friend and I entered a contest and won tickets to the Pomona show, but I couldn’t go so I had to live vicariously through her that night. I only cried a little, though, and I’m sure they’ll come back. On the other hand, I did get to see my friends’ band In Fear and Faith that night at sold out Chain Reaction, which ensued some nostalgic memories. Nothin’ like a hardcore show to unleash some anger on teenage scenesters. Concerts are concerts, so I still had a great night. Have a good week and good luck on midterms to state schools!

Delightful Mention!

Artist: Ratatat

Because of their socal shows this week, I haven’t been able to stop talking about them. Much to my surprise, a lot more people haven’t heard of Ratatat than I thought. This raises a major problem. Ratatat opened for Daft Punk the last time they were in LA, and they wouldn’t let just anyone carry that honor. Ratatat is an electronic/indie music duo out of Brooklyn, NY, composed of Mike Stroud (guitar) and Evan Mast (bass, synth, producer). Their music is more on the synthed-out, electronic side with added guitars and toe-tapping drum beats. A lot of their songs would work great for hip-hop artists to rap over (they’ve worked with Kid Cudi on songs like Pursuit of Happiness) or for mix tapes. They’ve provided us with two remixed mix tapes doing just that (Volume 1/Volume 2). I threw one of their mix tape songs on the YOLO list for you to get a feel of what they can really do. Hopefully, they come back soon because they’re latest album LP4 is my favorite and I need to see them throw down live. Here’s a picture my friend took from their sold out show at Pomona…it hurts to look at:

Artist: Beck
I’ve been listening to Beck consistently since the first time I ever heard him. He’s got a sound that I haven’t heard anywhere else. He combines a lot of rock, classic and new, and electronic while adding a weird funky feel that only he can pull off. All of his albums differ greatly which makes him very enjoyable to listen to. Pretty much has an album for every mood. Whether you wanna dance, or cry, or chill, or jam, he’s been there and has got the tunes for you. I was fortunate enough to meet him after I saw Air at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, because my friend was nice enough to give me friends of the band tickets. When we were in the waiting room to meet Air, I looked to my left and lo and behold there he was! I had to say something, so I just told him how much his works meant to me and asked if he was planning on playing in LA or making more music. The future looks grim in that regard. His live shows are action packed affairs, so you can bet I’ll have my fingers crossed for sure. Coachella, please Beck!

Kelis – 4th of July (Rusko Remix)
Rusko does it again, that cheeky bastard. You’ve probably heard me talk about him on here, and if not, just know that I gotta lotta love for the guy. He’s dubstep’s frontrunner in the world and has finally made the big move to LA to evoke some change in the scene. His last album was a major disappointment and is nothing like the sound of this song, so don’t let it fool you. His remixes and EPs definitely make up for it, though. Check out Chronic Mncher’s dubstep post to get the 411 on his bangers, and then some. I’m very selective with my dubstep, as it either hits home or is garbage. This song is the direction I hope dubstep heads towards. Super heavy, lots of creatively quick samples, and dirty bass drops. Make sure your speakers are turned up all the way, because dubstep just isn’t the same unless that bass is rattling your core.

Can it be Halloween all ready? Fuck man…I can’t wait for Haunted Mansion. Let me help you make your decision: Night 1/Night 2
