YOLO list

12FV

Come YOLO47 I’ll be a free man. Or maybe not “free” as much as a man of fewer worries. But until then, on the final grind of the school year with my UC peoples. I included a list of some of my favorite sets and mixes with the usual list, because I find they’re best to study with. I tried to put them in order of ones I liked best at the top…but I really love em all. Use or misuse at your own discretion and good luck to everyone. For everyone else out of school, fuck yourselves. Except for not really…I’ll be with ya in a week.

ZZT – Zzafrika (Julio Bashmore Remix) (Chill/Electronic)
ZZT – Zzafrika (Afrojack Rework) (Electronic)
Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue (Indie)
Nas – N.Y. State Of Mind (Hip Hop)
Nas – It Ain’t Hard To Tell (Hip Hop)
Beirut – Postcards From Italy (Folk)
Flinch – World On Fire (Dubstep)
Fussy Boy – Gold (Mord Fustang Remix) (Electro House)
Zedd – Changes ft. Champions (Original Mix) (Electronic)
Desert Noises – Building These Walls (Indie)

Mixes/Sets

The Twelves Essential Mix
My favorite essential mix ever. I can’t and won’t give it a rest. 2 solid hours of grade A electronic and house. Uniquely mixed in a way that only the Twelves can do.

Soulwax Live at Soulwaxmas 2008
Soulwax doing what they do best: flawless live sets. Little biased on this one because I saw them right before they played this in Europe at HHM 08 and it’s pretty similar, as far as I remember.

Moonchild’s Birthday Mix for Les Petits Bruits
Moonchild is definitely making a name for himself in the French/Disco house scene. This won’t be the last time he comes up on C+A+D. This mix has a bunch of his songs and remixes. Feel good and bass filled tunes.

Nero Essential Mix
Nero split this up into 3 parts. Dubstep/Electro/everything. The tracklist speaks for itself. Another favorite essential mix.

Treasure Fingers Live From Temple SF
Treasure Fingers…this guy can do no wrong. My favorite set of his so far.

Wolfgang Gartner Live at Winter Music Conference 2010
Right before Wolfgang took his final leap into the group of premier DJs. From his live show recordings and essential mix, I’d say this is his most well put together.

Treasure Fingers 2011 Spring Mix *Recorded Live In England*
Free Treasure Fingers Spring mix! More great house.

Fake Blood Essential Mix
Classic. Voted 4th best essential mix of 2009 and by good reason. Fake Blood is a bo$$.

Swedish House Mafia Live from EDC 2010
I’ll never forget this set from EDC. Witnessing this live put house music on a completely different level for me. One of my go-to’s for being productive.

Calvin Harris Essential Mix
2 hours of the Calvin Harris we know and love. He mixes it up a lot in this one. Hard filthy electro and dancy disco.

Soulwax Live at Hard Summer 2010
Soulwax returns to LA after a 2 year hiatus, and this low quality rip is all I have to remember it.

Wolfgang Gartner Essential Mix
60+ tracks in this massive mix by one of the top production wizards in the world. I was expecting more to be honest, but still a keeper.

I think it’s officially safe to say that house music is one of my favorite things to listen to. Not just house though. The bouncy disco house with just the right amount of soul and funk. Talkin 60s-70s vibes. I put together a list of tracks from DJs I feel most consistently match their songs up to these standards. Careful with this stuff though, if you like the first couple songs you’re going to want it all. In which case let me know! There’s a lot more where these came from, and every song is just as quality as the next. Once I realized how great it was to cruise the streets blaring relentlessly bass-filled house, I decided we should have a two part summer mix CD. Two parts mainly because I couldn’t fit everything I wanted onto one CD, but the more the merrier. The first half of this two part compilation is comin at you in the old school playlist style: all or nothing. Burn it, pop it in, put the top down and enjoy.

So here we are with week 45, Memorial Day weekend and I’m still at home. The beaches are getting packed even though the weather’s a bust. Meanwhile Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Benny Benassi, Avicii, Treasure Fingers, etc. etc. are spinning sets at pool parties and night clubs in Vegas, at what seems like the place to be during the end of May. What better way to commemorate our troops than getting belligerently drunk with some of the best DJs in the world? Who knows…well, for those who are around, enjoy your weekly dose of random/not so-random-goodies

YELLE!

It’s been quite the week for free concerts…got to see some acts that I had to miss out on from Coachella. Nosaj Thing and Diplo played a show at UCLA that was restricted for students, but thanks to some strings being pulled by homie Yama Nawabi I got in hassle free. First of all, damn you UCLA kids for not packing that ballroom! Spoiled kids don’t know what they have. Definitely not bitter from being rejected or anything. (Edit: Turns out the fire marshall capped at 1500…so that’s why it wasn’t packed. aaawwwWWWWKKKWWWwwwwaaarrddd) Anyway Nosaj was an interesting addition to the lineup of electro DJs. He’s not rage material, as most of the kids were prepared to do. Needless to say, I was front and center. Witness to Nosaj throwing down on the decks, and getting crafty as fuck with the drum machines. Though a man of few words, he played a steezed out set filled with Quest, Fog, Aquarium, and all the goodies. All the while with crazy ass visuals being projected on him and his table. Diplo…Diplo is always a party. With his main focus on swag, the kids got rowdy as hell as he packed a moombahton set with nasty dub and heavy electro. Diplo is definitely one of the more entertaining DJs to see and he got mad support from the crowd. Good times all around.

I was most excited to see Yelle at the Music Box last night. Not only did I have to deal with all my friends rubbing in my face how good she was at Coachella, it was her last stop of the North American tour and I knew they weren’t going to hold anything back for LA. Definitely one of the most fun shows I’ve been to. I was drenched with the positive vibes that were leaking from the ceiling. Everyone was stoked on life and super friendly while we all dance partied from start to finish. “Merci beaucoup Los Angeleeez!!!” Yelle is such a performer and her backing band couldn’t have been more entertaining. They played a near flawless set while squeezing in some laughs and love. And to top it all off, I got another drum stick to add to my collection! Thanks to the fucking awesome security guard that made it happen. I’ll never forget it. Make a point to see her next time she’s around. It’s worth every penny! But thanks to Gotta Dance Dirty, I got to attend free of charge. More love and respect to those guys for hooking it up.

People have been saying lately that they wish I went back to longer lists, but I feel like for the most part it’s too much to take in if it’s more than 5 or so tracks. I want the least amount of songs to be skipped over by you guys. Keep the feedback coming friends, it really means a lot. I’ll do whatever I can to make sure these lists’ awesome levels are optimized for everyone. Give everything a go…YOLO!

This week made it that much more apparent to me how essential new music is to my happiness. Album leaks all over the place..All I have to say at this point is that you guys have a lot to be excited for. I mentioned earlier that Foster the People‘s LP is going to be released on the 23rd, and don’t forget about sebastiAn‘s first full length that’s also supposed to be coming out this month. I can’t stop listening to both of them, and I left you guys a little taste below.

Also: SUPER BUMMED I MISSED RUSKO LAST NIGHT! But I purchased my HARD Summer ticket instead, so all is definitely not lost. If you went, let me know how it was in the comments please. Pictures/vids are cool too.

Love,
Skinny Genes

Hey everybody! Good to be back in the mix after an interesting weekend out of town…Got some fresh new music for you guys this week. Tyler, the Creator of OFWGKTA is releasing his much anticipated second album Goblin this Tuesday. +Jangbar will have us covered on that one. These guys are doing crazy big things and they’re even gonna be at HARD Summer this year. Should spice things up a bit. Also, what I’m most excited about is the audio and video recordings that have been surfacing from Coachella. There is nothing like having a recording of a set you were a part of. Something that you can save forever. When the crowd cheers it sends chills down your spine, because you were there and can swear that you hear yourself. I’m referring mainly to The Strokes recording. Amazing quality and it’s just as flawless as I remember. I zipped it up so you guys can download it easily. Go ahead and click here. Without further ado, I bring you #42:

Seems like the more music festivals become relevant, the less money I have to go to them. This past week brought light to Outside Lands, Audiotistic, EDC, HARD Summer…it just doesn’t stop, and I want to go to them all!! I bought my Outside Lands ticket already, because it’s on the verge of selling out and I don’t want to risk anything. My priorities are as follows: Outside Lands > Audiotistic > HARD Summer > EDC. The EDC rumors are pouring out, and I’m not trying to fork over another $100+ til I see precisely how Insomniac plans to blow our minds with a full lineup. A lot of those fests are within a week of each other which should make things interesting. This summer is going to be great. That being said, make up your minds and get tickets to wherever you want to go before it’s too late. Here’s #41:
