[Concert Recall + Video] Wolfmother @ The Observatory OC

Wolfmother

I’m cut. I’m bruised. I’m sore. And I owe it all to Wolfmother. This week marked the near three year anniversary of this hard rock sensation’s last trip the the U.S. Finally headed our way from the down under, Wolfmother, formerly disbanded, came together to tackle southern California in a way few could really say they were prepared for. With the first date at the historic Troubadour in LA selling out within minutes, they scheduled another for the following week; frustratingly selling out even faster than the first. When all was thought to be lost, Orange County got love with a show at the Observatory, and my dream of seeing these guys out of a festival setting was that much closer to becoming reality.

In the split second time I had to decide between walking into the pit or carrying onto the second level tier of the Observatory, my subconscious made the executive decision and pulled me into the sweaty sea of eager bodies. I was immersed into the type of crowd I don’t see often enough. Passionate fans that truly understood the special opportunity we were about to take advantage of. Before I knew it, the opening chords of Woman echoed through the venue, and I was covered in half my beer. The crowd was a wave pushing between all corners of the pit. I pushed myself up ontop of one of the behemoths that was kind enough to lift me and started the crowd surfing early for the occasion

The crowd could not have been more in sync. Chanting. Screaming. Helping each other up. You could feel the energy being reciprocated from Wolfmother themselves. Even when they claimed they didn’t expect over fifty people to show up in response to the deafening roar of the crowd. They played everything we could have asked for; old and new. Dimension, Love Train (video below), Keep Moving, and the outstanding Joker and the Thief encore. It was a setlist I wish never ended. It was hot. It was sweaty. It was smelly. It was borderline unbearable. It couldn’t have been more worth it.

There is something unbeatable about live music like this. Something that electronic music will never be able to compare to. The energy of sound being created right in front of you…When it’s done right, there is nothing better. Nothing that feels more real; irreplicable. I live for shows like these, and I wasn’t alone on this that night.
